You better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Have you ever listened to a song that you don’t know a thing about except that you love it? It’s like love at first sight — but your ears are the ones doing the job. That’s exactly what happened to me with the song Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People.

My friend, Ahmad, and his band Your Imaginary Friends did a cover of this during the Pak Da Kanser gig in Autonomy Bar last Saturday and I was just smitten. At that time I don’t know the original artist, the lyrics, or what the song is all about. All I know is that I gotta listen to it again and again and again.

And yeah, that’s what I did for the remainder of the weekend. Listen to it countless times and trying to analyze the lyrics. Turns out that the song’s background is a bit dark — a stark contrast to its upbeat tempo and I-wanna-dance-to-it-like-I’m-high vibe. That made me love it even more. It reminds me of The Pixies’ Here Comes Your Man or The Smiths’ There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. You just can’t decide whether to feel sad or happy while listening to them.

I know that some people might think that songs like these are not advisable to listen to because they are suggestive or a bit too negative. But for me it’s a chance to look into another person’s perspective.

Try to listen to it and let me know what you think:
